Chemistry is connected to every aspect of life - from the medicines you take for a headache to the colour of the clothes you wear. Modern life would not be the same without chemists.
As a chemist, you will study the nature of atoms and molecules and the way they react together to produce useful products. You will also study both organic and inorganic materials, looking at their properties, syntheses, reactions, analyses, and applications.
For all our students, we place a strong emphasis on a practical chemistry education that is relevant to industry, thereby equipping our graduates with the skills to improve the world around us.
Why chemistry, why Imperial?
As far back as the 1840s and our roots as the Royal College of Chemistry, we have always believed in the importance of a practical education. We believe that intensive laboratory experience not only teaches chemical techniques and scientific method, but also provides a framework for developing transferable skills.
Today we remain true to these founding principles by placing a strong emphasis on a practical chemistry education delivered from our dedicated teaching hub at South Kensington. Our graduates are highly valued by both chemical and non-chemical employers, and we regularly host recruitment visits by UK, European and US companies who include Imperial in a small group of trusted chemistry departments whose students they recruit.
Investing in your future with world class facilities
All of our degrees include intensive laboratory experience set among amazing facilities at our beautiful South Kensington campus and the custom-built Molecular Sciences Research Hub at White City - the most expensive chemistry building in the world - where our community thrives. In your final year, your research project will be done at White City where you will benefit from the knowledge of our world class researchers in an environment of unparalleled investment.
We also offer a broad range of BSc and MSci degrees taught jointly with Imperial College Business School and the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication. This gives you the chance to tailor your degree to your own interests and career aspirations, including ample opportunities to undertake placements, internships and years abroad.
